Long before air conditioning, houses in this part of the world were cooled with khus. Screens woven from vetiver root, called khus tatti, were hung across doorways and splashed with water, and as the breeze passed through, the room filled with a damp, green, earthy smell and the air genuinely felt cooler. What is khus attar?

Khus attar is a natural perfume oil made by distilling the roots of vetiver grass. The plant grows tall and unremarkable above ground, but its roots hold a dense, cooling fragrance, and it is those roots that are harvested, washed, dried and slowly steam-distilled. The purest expression is called rooh khus, literally the soul of khus, and it smells of damp soil, cut grass and cool water over a soft woody base. You will also see it written khas attar or ruh khus, and sold simply as khus perfume. Because it is an oil rather than an alcohol spray, it sits close to the skin and releases its scent slowly across the day.

Khus attar price in Pakistan

Original khus attar at Usman Baig comes in two grades:

• Khus Indian Musa Nagar: fresh, bright and true to the root, from Rs.3,500.
• Khus Indian Qadeem: aged for a rounder, smoother, deeper character, from Rs.4,500.

Both are sold in 3 ml, 6 ml and 12 ml bottles, so you can try a small size before committing to a larger one. Pure khus attar costs more than a scented oil labelled khus because real vetiver root takes years to mature underground and yields very little oil when distilled. The trade is worth it: one or two dabs of the genuine thing lasts the whole day, so a small bottle goes a long way. Musa Nagar and Qadeem: two ways to wear khus

Vetiver takes its character from where it grows and how long the oil is left to settle. Our Musa Nagar khus comes from a region long associated with fine vetiver, and it is the brighter of the two, green and immediate, the closest thing to the smell of freshly watered earth. The Qadeem is aged, and time does to khus what it does to oud: the sharp green edge softens, the earthiness deepens, and the whole thing becomes rounder and more refined. If you want the classic, recognisable khus scent, choose Musa Nagar. If you want something quieter and more mature, choose Qadeem. There is no single best khus attar, only the one that suits how you like to wear it, and trying a 3 ml bottle of each is the easiest way to decide.

How khus attar is made

The roots are lifted after the plant has had time to develop underground, then washed free of soil, dried, and steam-distilled over a slow, low heat so the delicate green notes survive. Traditional distillers collect the vapour into a base oil rather than water, which is what gives a genuine rooh khus its weight and its staying power. It is unhurried work, and it is the reason a real khus attar smells layered rather than flat.

Wearing khus attar

Use a small amount. Touch the applicator to the inside of the wrists and the base of the neck and let it dry on its own rather than rubbing it in. Khus is unisex, easy to wear, and light enough for daytime, work and hot weather, which is what sets it apart from heavier attars. It also works beautifully as a layer: a drop of khus under a warmer scent cools and freshens the whole thing.
