Agarwood does not start out fragrant. When an agar tree is wounded or infected, it defends itself by producing a dark, aromatic resin, and it is that resin-soaked heartwood which is distilled into oud attar. Only a small share of trees ever form it, which is why oud is scarce. As a wearable fragrance it behaves nothing like a spray.
